New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his triumph in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

However his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
