'Those concluding hours tested every limit': UK duo finish extraordinary voyage in Australia after paddling across the vast Pacific

One more day. Another day battling through the unforgiving ocean. One more day of blistered hands gripping unforgiving oars.

Yet after traversing 8,000+ sea miles on the water – a monumental half-year voyage across the Pacific that included close encounters with whales, failing beacons and cocoa supply emergencies – the ocean presented a final test.

Strong 20-knot breezes near Cairns continuously drove their tiny rowboat, their rowing boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now achingly close.

Supporters anticipated on shore as a planned midday arrival evolved into afternoon, subsequently 4pm, then early evening. Finally, at 6.42pm, they arrived at Cairns Yacht Club.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe stated, at last on firm earth.

"Breezes were forcing us off course, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We found ourselves beyond the marked route and considered swimming the remaining distance. To at last reach our destination, after talking about it for so long, just feels incredible."

The Monumental Voyage Commences

The English women – 28-year-old Rowe and 25-year-old Payne – set out from Peruvian shores on May fifth (a first try in April was derailed by a rudder failure).

During 165 ocean days, they averaged 50 nautical miles a day, paddling together in daylight, single rower overnight while her teammate dozed minimal sleep in a confined sleeping area.

Endurance and Obstacles

Sustained by 400 kilograms of dehydrated meals, a saltwater conversion device and a vessel-based sprout cultivation system, the duo depended upon an inconsistent solar power setup for only partial electrical requirements.

During most of their voyage through the expansive ocean, they lacked directional instruments or signaling devices, creating a phantom vessel scenario, hardly noticeable to maritime traffic.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, traversed marine highways and weathered furious gales that, at times, silenced all of their electronics.

Historic Accomplishment

Yet they continued paddling, each pull following the last, during intensely warm periods, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They established a fresh milestone as the first all-female pair to cross the southern Pacific by rowing, without breaks or external assistance.

Additionally they collected more than £86,000 (Australian $179,000) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Daily Reality at Sea

The duo made every effort to maintain communication with civilization outside their tiny vessel.

During the 140s of their journey, they announced a "sweet treat shortage" – reduced to their final two portions with another 1,600 kilometers ahead – but permitted themselves the luxury of unwrapping a portion to celebrate England's Red Roses victory in the World Cup.

Personal Insights

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, had not been at sea until she rowed the Atlantic solo during 2022 establishing a record.

She now has a second ocean conquered. However there were instances, she admitted, when they feared they wouldn't make it. Starting within the first week, a way across the world's largest ocean felt impossible.

"Our electrical systems were diminishing, the desalination tubes ruptured, yet after numerous mends, we accomplished a workaround and just limped along with little power for the rest of the crossing. Each time problems occurred, we merely made eye contact and went, 'typically it occurred!' But we kept going."

"Having Jess as a partner proved invaluable. Our mutual dedication stood out, we resolved issues as a team, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she stated.

Rowe originates from Hampshire. Before her Pacific triumph, she paddled the Atlantic, hiked England's South West Coast Path, scaled the Kenyan peak and pedaled across Spanish terrain. There might still be more.

"We had such a good time together, and we're already excited to plan new adventures collectively once more. Another teammate wouldn't have worked."
