The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
