Mikel Arteta Warns Fitness Woes Could Hinder The Gunners' Silverware Hunt
Arsenal's manager has voiced fears that his team's pursuit for titles this campaign is being jeopardized by a concerning cycle of injuries and a relentless schedule.
Fresh Squad Update
Star player Declan Rice missed the midweek clash to face Club Brugge due to sickness. In addition, attacker Leandro Trossard and center-back William Saliba remain unavailable.
There was, on a brighter note, better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian striker added to their European squad. He comes in for the injured youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an ankle problem.
"Practice, no because we lack time to train. But clearly the fact that you are missing players, you are loading other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a truly vicious cycle."
Dowman's issue is the latest in a long series of fitness problems for the club. Since the beginning of last campaign, they have suffered 95 injuries, the second-most total in the Premier League.
Long-Term Absentees
- Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are not expected to return until 2025.
- Midfielder Kai Havertz continues to rehabilitate from knee and "requires more time," as stated by the manager.
Arteta rejected the idea that practice methods were to blame, citing a shortage of opportunity for sessions. He emphasized the strain on available players, some of whom have featured over 150 games in two seasons.
Recruitment Strategy
Even after a major summer investment exceeding £250 million, Arteta stated the team is unlikely planning to enter the January recruitment market.
"Right now we're just focusing on getting the players back and with luck it will be a matter of a short time," he commented. "We know how important those weeks are going to be."
Looking Ahead
The team suffered their first loss in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, reducing their advantage at the summit of the league to two points.
Attention now shifts to the Champions League, where a sixth consecutive group win would virtually guarantee a top-eight finish. Forward Gabriel Martinelli could make history by finding the net in a fifth straight consecutive European fixture.
"We are frustrated with the result, but we have to move forward," he stated. "It's not like everything is going wrong because we lost one game. So we remain united."
