Doris Makes Ireland Team But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has named skipper Doris in his Irish roster for the fall Tests, however lock McCarthy is absent.

Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in July.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included because of fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, the team will play Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's three league games this season and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper does not regain fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
