Christantus Uche Fuels Straightforward Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
